Union's Campbell Named TranSouth Coach of the Year; Four Ladies Honored

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/27/2007 - The TranSouth Athletic Conference released the 2006-2007 women’s basketball all-conference team and postseason awards today. For the third time in his career, Union University head coach was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year.

Four Union Lady Bulldogs were named first team All-Conference performers. Josephine Owino, Natanya Smith, and Kaitlin Dudley each received the honor with Dudley also being named to the All-Freshman team. Crystal Eason was named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete.

Campbell led Union to the regular season title for the sixth time in his eight years at the helm of the Bulldog program. This is the third (2001, 2002, 2006) time Campbell has won the conference coach of the year award. The Bulldogs have won the last two NAIA Championships in women’s basketball and 10 of the past 12 TranSouth Regular Season Championships. His current .861 winning percentage is highest among NAIA women's coaches with at least five years of coaching.

Owino, a 6-foot-4 sophomore center, averaged 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Owino ranks No. 3 in the NAIA with a .650 field goal percentage. She also leads the TranSouth with 1.7 blocks per game.

Smith, a 6-foot-2 senior forward from Memphis, led Union with 13.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. She led Union with nine double-doubles on the year and ranked No. 1 in the TranSouth with her 8.7 rebounds per game.

Dudley, a 5-foot-10 freshman guard from Dyer, Tennessee, finished just one-tenth of a point behind Smith in scoring with 13.3 points per game. In her 29 team games, Dudley scored double figures in all but six games. Dudley ranked second on the team with 57 three pointers and second in the TranSouth with 43-percent (57-133) shooting percentage from behind the arc.

Eason, a 5-foot-8 junior guard from Scotts Hill, Tennessee, averaged 10.4 points per game and led Union with 68 three pointers made on the season.
