Union’s Signs JCM Soccer Standout

Jackson, Tenn. - 4/30/2002 - Union University adds more local flavor to their roster as the Bulldogs sign Jackson Central-Merry star, Christopher Anthony. Anthony is the second soccer player to ink with Union for the upcoming 2002 season.

The past 72 hours have been a mind boggling whirlwind for Jackson Central Merry High School's Christopher Anthony. On Saturday his Cougar soccer team won their first ever Best of the West Soccer Championship. After scoring a goal and adding an assist in the final game, Christopher was named Best of the West Tournament MVP. Just three days later, Christopher signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Union University Bulldog Soccer Team. Union's Coach White feels that Christopher has the ability to make an impact for the Bulldog team right away -- "Christopher has the heart of a champion. His extraordinary desire to win every time he steps on the field will make him a very successful college soccer player. We expect great things from this young man in the years to come."

Christopher has had tremendous success on his club team as well. Two years ago as team captain he led his Jackson Soccer Club to a State Championship, which is the only state championship ever won by a Jackson area soccer team.

Christopher's ability to score is well documented. His 49 goals and 34 assists during his career at JCM ranks him among the school's all time leaders in total points. His scoring prowess will be nicely complimented by Union's other offensive weapons.

The Bulldog soccer team opens the season with a free exhibition match on Saturday, August 17th at 7 PM at Union Field.
