Union Softball Sweeps Bethel In Double-Header

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/12/2007 - The Union University Lady Bulldog softball team posted a double-header sweep over TranSouth foe and area rival Bethel College (Tenn.). Union took the first game 6-2 and rallied in game two for a 6-3 win. With the wins, Union moved to 25-12 overall and 15-6 in the TranSouth. Bethel dropped to 9-19 on the season and 8-16 in the league.

Union jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ashley Walters popped a two-run homer over the left field fence to start her 5-for-7 evening. After Bethel posted a run in the fourth, Union scored two more in the bottom of the frame on another two-run homer. This time by Bolivar native Kristen Kirk. Union added two more in the fifth to take the opening win 6-2. Walters was 3-for-3 in the game with three RBI. Amy Chatham earned the win to move to 2-0 on the season with seven innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits and three strikeouts. Meaghan Morris (4-11) took the loss. Paige Cooper and Brandi Scroggins led Bethel with two hits each.

The second game had Bethel scoring first with a run in the top of the third inning. Union answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third when Walters drove home two with a double down the left field line. Bethel rallied for two runs of their own capped off by a double by Ashton McFarland. Union, however, regained the lead for good with three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to seal the win. Union was led by Walters who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Michelle Albonetti added two hits in the game. Cassie Turley (11-8) tossed three perfect innings of relief to earn the win. McFarland ( 4-6) took the loss.

Up next for Union will be another home conference double-header on Saturday at 1:00 pm versus Cumberland University (Tenn.).
