Gary Johnson
Head Coach

In the first season of competition, Gary Johnson led the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the TranSouth Conference. Johnson was named the TranSouth Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2001. Now in his second season at the helm, Johnson will continue to add to the young program and compete for a conference championship.

Originally from Tulsa, Okla., Johnson graduated from Union University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He completed his Master of Science degree at the University of Memphis in December of 1993. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Middle Tennessee State University.

In addition to women’s cross country, Johnson will continue in his second season as men’s cross country coach and his sixth season as the men’s tennis coach. He completed a sweep of his sports in 2001-02 when he received the coach of the year award in each of the three sports he coaches. Johnson has been named TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year in women’s cross country twice (1999, 2001), men’s cross country once (2001), and men’s tennis four seasons (1999-2002).

In only the second season of the newly formed program, Johnson has recruited some immediate impact runners. Johnson looks to be able to compete with and defeat teams such as conference and region powerhouse Berry College. Union finish runner-up behind Berry in 2001 in the TranSouth Conference

Johnson is married to the former Holly Tingor of Jackson. The two are active fitness runners and are members of Englewood Baptist Church.
