Before Union: Smith prepped at South-Doyle High School. He was a two-sport athlete what at South-Doyle, running track and cross country for four years. During his senior season, Smith place 16 in the Knoxville city championship, while posting a 23rd place finish in the TSSAA region championship. While at South-Doyle, Smith was able to get to know and train with 2004 and 2008 Olympian Anthony Famiglietti. He was selected as team captain in both track and cross country as a junior and senior. In the classroom, Smith was chosen as one of two students as South-Doyle's Scholastic Excellence Award. He also received the Key to Success award.
