Clovis Simas took over the Union men’s soccer program in 2006 as only the second head coach in the history of the program. Prior to take the head coaching job, Simas served as the reserve team coach as well as being an assistant coach for the varsity team.

In his first season, Simas led the team to their highest ever NAIA National Ranking when the Bulldogs reached No. 9. The team also reached new hights with one of the biggest wins in the history of the program when Union knocked of the No. 1 ranked Lindsey Wilson, 2-1 in overtime.

Simas was a Bulldog soccer player during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In just two seasons with Union, Simas became a favorite among his teammates and the coaching staff with his hard work on and off the field, as well as, his outstanding personality.

During his Union playing career, Simas served as Team Captain and was named an NCCAA Scholar Athlete in 2003. He was an instrumental part in Union's 2003 NCCAA National Championship. In 2002, his first season with Union, Simas was named to the TranSouth All-Conference Team, as well as, the NCCAA All-MidEast Region Team. Overall, Simas scored 13 goals and 17 assists in his two seasons with the Bulldogs.

Simas, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, graduated Cum Laude from Union in December of 2004 with a degree in Marketing with a minor in Spanish.

Simas has numerous soccer coaching credentials and experience. He was certified through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America when he received his Advanced National Coaching License in 2003. During his time since finishing his playing career at Union, Simas served as coach for the Union women’s soccer club team from 2002-2003. He also was the boy’s varsity head coach at Trinity Christian Academy in 2003. In addition, Simas has worked with the Englewood Baptist Soccer Academy and the Jackson Club – Under 10 league.

Among his numerous soccer achievements, Simas represented the Brazilian National Team and helped lead the team to the FIFA Futsal World Cup Title in 1996. That season, he led the team in points. Simas also represented the World United team as the team captain and helped lead the team to the US National Futsal Title in 2003. Over his youth, high school, and college career, Simas has been a part of numerous championship teams including but not limited to the Kansas City Midwest Division Title (1999, 2000), Minas Gerais State Title (1996, 1997), Futsal World Cup Title (1996), Flowers Tournament of Australia (1996), Iberia Cup Title (1993) and Span Cup Title (1992). The playing career of Simas also produced several individual honors such as NPSL All-Star (1999-2001), NPSL Rookie of the Year (1999), Kansas City Attack Offensive Player of the Year (1999-2001). Simas also was honored for being the high scorer in several events (Minas Tenis Clube, Flowers Tournament, Santa Catarina Open, and Cup of Spain).

Simas and his wife Doris live in Jackson with their two children, Gabriele and Camila.

Scott Marksberry enteres his second season as the assistant coach for the Union University men’s soccer team. Marksbery spent four seasons playing for Union during the first four years of the program’s existence from 1998-2001.

Marksberry graduated Magna Cum Laude in May of 2002 with a major in Business Management and a minor in Christian Ministry/Recreation. Since graduating from Union, Marksberry served as the Assistant Director of Operations for the Memphis Athletic Ministries from August 2002 through May of 2004. He also worked during the summers of 2002, 2004, and 2005 as a Head Coach and Camp Director for the Chicago Eagles Soccer Ministry. Marksberry has also spent numerous hours serving in missions and volunteer work. Marksberry was a Young Life Leader, did International Mission work in Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, and South Africa. In January of 2007, Marksberry earned his NSCAA National Diploma.

After coming to Union as a student in 1998, Marksberry took advantage of several coaching and playing opportunities. He trained for three weeks with Botafogo FC in Riberao Preto, Brazil in 2000, played with the Chicago Eagles in 2004, and coach a team of college players on a playing tour of Brazil in 2005.

During his playing career at Union, Marksberry earned numerous honors. In 1999, he helped lead Union to their first ever NAIA National ranking as they reached the No. 19 spot. In 2000, he was named Union University Futsal Invitational MVP, Boise Cup MVP, NAIA Scholar Athlete, TranSouth Conference and NAIA Region XI Player of the Week, NCCAA All-MidEast Region, and NCCAA All-American. In 2001, he earned NAIA Scholar Athlete, NCCAA Academic All-American, NCCAA MidEast Region Player of the Year, and NCCAA All-American.

Marksberry was also Union’s Team Captain from 1999-2001. He tallied 23 career goals, 25 career assists, and 71 career points. He leads Union’s all-time list with 87 career starts and he played in all 89 team matches during his career.

Marksberry and his wife Jennifer were married in November of 2004. She currently works at Union in Enrollment Services.
