January 9, 2011 - Tennessee Educational Technology Conference (TETC) was helped in Nashville, TN on December 1-3, 2010. Designed specifically for school and district educational technology leaders and instructors, TETC offers opportunities for growth and development through training sessions, labs, workshops, interest sessions, and peer networking. TETC is the premiere venue by which educators are able to better the knowledge, quality and access to educational technology and integration in the school systems of Tennessee, benefitting children and communities statewide. The theme, Transform Tennessee - collaborate, communicate, innovate, create and initiate, was initiated throughout the conference.
Dr. Anna C. Clifford presented two different sessions at TETC. Participants in the session, Family Vacation to Teachable Moments, discussed moving family vacation photos and memorabilia into the classroom as a teaching tool — virtual fieldtrip.
Unpack those family pictures and video clips, and create rich learning experiences for the students! Grounded in curriculum-standards, we will target the development of virtual fieldtrips. Let’s investigate research supporting the use of virtual fieldtrips as a teaching tool, discuss procedures for planning and developing the journey with assessment, and explore various user friendly-free tech tools to make it happen! The second session, Mini-Lessons for Mama, captured and designed mini-lessons to guide home studies’ support.
“I do want to help him with his school work. I don’t know how to do it!”
This is the cry of many parents who are indeed interested in supporting and guiding their children with school work. In an attempt to close the teaching- learning gap for the parents, mini- lessons are developed to teach skills or concepts to parents, based on the P-12 curriculum standards. VoiceThread (http://voicethread) is used to generate the mini-lessons. The multimedia mini-lessons hold selected photos, documents and video clips, integrated with voice over. A second language can be incorporated, as well. Key concepts are highlighted using the doodle feature. The collaboration feature is active, when effective. The lesson segments are embedded in or linked to class websites for parents to access
