History Department Recognizes Academic Achievement At Its Annual Awards Banquet

May 2, 2013

The history department held its annual awards banquet in Union University’s Coburn Dining Room on May 2, 2013. Some 45 people attended the event, where several students were recognized for outstanding work in history and for leadership in the department’s student organizations. The department also presented its Fifth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award to Mr. Nelson Piercey for his long, successful career in education, both as a teacher and an administrator. Dr. Hal Poe, the Charles Colson Professor of Faith and Culture in Union’s School of Theology and Missions, was the evening’s featured speaker; he talked about Edgar Allan Poe and mystery writing. State Senator Lowe Finney made a special appearance at the event to present a framed copy of Tennessee Senate Joint Resolution No. 143 to Union’s Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society; the resolution congratulates the chapter on its 60th anniversary in 2013. The Rutledge Honorary History Club, led by Dr. Terry Lindley, coordinated the banquet.

The department awards and the students who received them were: Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Pin and Academic Excellence Certificate – Mary Ellen Poe; History Major Awards – Patricia Dawson and Jeffrey Lewoczko; History Minor Award – Will Miller; History Student Teacher Award – Chad Buckley; Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Paper Awards – second place to Jeffrey Lewoczko and third place to Patricia Dawson; Delta-Psi Chapter awards for students who presented papers at the 2013 Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Belmont University – Patricia Dawson, Jeffrey Lewoczko, and Mary Ellen Poe; certificates of appreciation for student organization leaders – Jeffrey Lewoczko as Phi Alpha Theta president, Mary Ellen Poe as Phi Alpha Theta vice president, and Mary Ellen Poe as Rutledge Honorary History Club president.

Another part of the banquet program consisted of the installation of the Rutledge Honorary History Club’s officers for 2013-2014. Those inducted were: Charles Snow, president; Colton Gebben, vice president; Bree McCuin, secretary; and Luke Trammell, senator.

The evening’s events concluded with a focus on Phi Alpha Theta. Dr. Stephen Carls read excerpts from Tennessee Senate Joint Resolution No. 143, which highlights many of the contributions and successes that the Delta-Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta has had during its sixty-year history. The 27 Phi Alpha Theta members at the banquet then joined together for group photos with the framed resolution as the centerpiece.
