History Department Honors Graduating History Majors And Phi Alpha Theta Members at Annual Cookout

May 10, 2013

The history department honored graduating history majors and Phi Alpha Theta members at the 21st Annual Phi Alpha Theta/Department of History Cookout at Dr. Stephen Carls’s home on May 10, 2013. Some 40 people participated in the event, including all full-time and part-time department members from Union’s Jackson campus. Attendees enjoyed a largely homemade meal that included barbecue, French roasted potatoes, a three-bean casserole, coleslaw, guacamole dip and chips, a strawberry trifle, a pound cake, a dark chocolate cake, and strawberry glaze pies. Although the cookout was forced inside because of inclement weather, it was still a very happy, festive occasion.

During the evening program, the department celebrated the following history majors and Phi Alpha Theta members who will participate in Union’s graduation on May 18: Katy Fraley, Justin Gullett, Jordan Hayes, Jeffrey Lewoczko, Will Miller, Alan Mitchell, Glenae Nora, Elizabeth Shaw, Wil Sloan, and Logan Smith. The department also gave special recognition to Ms. Kendra BeDen, the Jones Suite academic secretary, who will receive her BSOL degree at the graduation exercises. All received graduation gift bags from the department as did three history majors who were unable to attend: Chad Buckley, Patricia Dawson, and Mary Ellen Poe.

The final event of the evening was to recognize the many contributions that Dr. Judy LeForge has made to the department since she began teaching at Union University in 1999. She will retire from full-time teaching at the end of the school year and move to Nashville. The department gave her a handmade silver-metal tray with her initials engraved on it as a departure gift.
