Membership Requirements and Benefits

Students who have completed 12 semester hours of college-level history with a GPA of 3.1 and who have a GPA of 3.0 in the remainder of their courses when they reach the 12-hour threshold in history are eligible for membership in Phi Alpha Theta.

The Delta-Psi Chapter president and the faculty advisor together send out a letter of invitation early in each semester to all students they know of who have met the requirements for membership. Students wishing to join fill out a membership form, pay a one-time fee of $45 for national and local dues, and attend an initiation shortly thereafter. If a student has not received a letter of invitation, but meets the membership requirements and is interested in joining, he/she should contact Dr. Stephen Carls, the chapter's faculty advisor, immediately.

New members will receive a certificate of membership, a one-year subscription to the journal The Historian, a Delta-Psi Chapter T-shirt, and a notepad. When they graduate, they will receive a Phi Alpha Theta honor cord to wear at Union's commencement services. In addition, Phi Alpha Theta members may attend all chapter-sponsored functions, such as the October pizza party and French Christmas dinner, as well as Phi Alpha Theta regional conferences when they are paper presenters, at no cost. Members are also eligible to participate in national Phi Alpha Theta events and competitions.
