Suggested Types of Audition Material for Entering Freshmen
(transfer students, please contact the Department of Music for audition repertoire requirements)


Instrumental (Brass, Woodwind, Percussion):

  1. Perform two movements from solos or etudes of contrasting styles and tempos of the performers choice. The music should feature the strengths of the player's technique, range, musical control, dynamic range, and overall ability. The playing of various major scales and sight reading is expected.

Memorization is not a requirement for the audition.

Organ:

  1. Demonstrate piano proficiency by performing some Two Part Inventions of Bach, or a sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, or works of comparable difficulty.

  2. On the Organ perform:
    a) one Baroque composition (Bach),
    b) one contrasting piece and a hymn of the student's choice
    c) sight reading

Memorization is not a requirement for the audition.

Piano:

  1. Perform from memory two (2) selections of standard piano literature representing two different periods or styles: example - Baroque and Romantic; Classical and Contemporary, etc.

  2. Play all major scales 4 octaves.

Vocal:

Perform two songs, preferably from memory (accompanist supplied if needed and requested). The first song may be chosen freely by the student. The second should be an aria appropriate for the applicant's voice from an oratorio or opera, or any standard art song. The following list of vocal anthologies contain music appropriate for the second type of song; these anthologies are available at the Union University Bookstore and many music stores.
