Fall Convocation will encourage renewal and serving others

JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 27, 2001 – Union University will hold its annual Fall Convocation service this Friday, August 31 at 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel, kicking off the new 2001-2002 school year.

Union President David S. Dockery will speak to the 2500 students, faculty and staff in an address titled “Renewing Minds, Serving Church and Society,” based on scripture references Romans 12:1-2 and Philippians 1:27 – 2:4.

“The 2001-02 academic year is filled with promise,” said Dockery. “Enrollment is strong. We have a great spirit across campus. Opening convocation will provide an opportunity for us to focus afresh on the distinctive identity and mission of Union University.”

For the fourth consecutive year, more than 400 outstanding freshmen have joined the university’s ranks, with 39 as valedictorians and salutatorians of their senior class. More than 30% were in the top 10% of their class with 84% graduating with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Fall classes begin Wednesday, August 29.
