JACKSON, Tenn. – March 19, 2009– Union University senior history major Kathleen Cooper won second place in the Jo Helen Imani Beard Civil Rights History Paper Competition at the Ninth Annual Civil Rights Conference Feb. 20-27 at the University of Tennessee-Martin.
Cooper’s paper dealt with a Negro League baseball team in Memphis and was entitled, “The Memphis Red Sox: Barely Hanging On, 1947-1960.”
Alice-Catherine Carls, the Tom Elam Distinguished Professor of History at UTM, presented Cooper with the second-place certificate and check for $200 in a special ceremony at Union University March 6.
Cooper and two other history majors-- Joshua Abbotoy and Hannah Holliday --also presented papers at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville Feb. 28.
History faculty members Keith Bates, Stephen Carls and Judy LeForge accompanied the students to Clarksville.
