JACKSON, Tenn. – Jan. 27, 2004– Union University has announced that the 2004 Union Forum this spring will feature political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks, who will discuss the upcoming presidential election. Shields will speak Thurs., March 4, and Brooks will speak Thurs., April 1, at luncheons on Union's campus.
Shields, a syndicated columnist and commentator, has covered the American political scene for more than 30 years. He is the principal political analyst on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS and moderator of CNN's The Capital Gang. In 1979 he began writing his now syndicated column on national politics for the Washington Post. Shields is the author of On the Campaign Trail. He also has taught courses on American politics and the press at Harvard University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Brooks is a regular analyst for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and senior editor at The Weekly Standard. He is a columnist for the New York Times and a contributing editor for Newsweek and the Atlantic Monthly. Before joining the Weekly Standard in 1995, Brooks spent nine years with the Wall Street Journal, where his posts included op-ed editor and Middle-Eastern, Russian, European and South Africa correspondent. His works have appeared in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, Smart Money, U.S. News and World Report and the National Review.
Each spring, the Union Forum hosts distinguished speakers in an effort to provide opportunities for lively conversation with the nation's leaders and thinkers. Both luncheons begin at 11:45 a.m. in the Coburn Dining Room of the Barefoot Student Union Building on Union's campus. Tickets are $20 per seat and tables of six may still be purchased for one or both events.
