Facilities

The W.D. Powell Theatre is located in the Penick Academic Building on the campus of Union University in Jackson, TN. The theatre provides the community with a significant range of theatre experiences, while at the same time, supporting the creative work of our artists. The 250-seat, black box theatre features a flexible staging area and lighting & sound system. Recent shows have been performed both in the round and in a three-quarter thrust where the audience sits on three sides of the stage. Theatre students also benefit from a separate workshop, practice hall and prop/costume shop.

Our intimate control booth is where we run the lighting, sound and projection effects for all productions. We have a quality audio mixing console and use a Jands Vista lighting console for our shows. Our dimmers are also located in a closet in the booth.

• 2 Vari-lite moving lights
• 24 LED pars
• 4 LED ETC lekos
• Hazer & Fog machine
• 4 body mics with receivers
• 5 LED cyc lights
• A large inventory of conventional fresnels and lekos

The Scene Shop is an 800-square-foot space and is equipped with all the tools needed for scenery and prop construction. We also store some of our stock scenic elements in this space. The Scene Shop was recently expanded and remodeled in January 2017.

All the costumes used in performances are constructed and stored in this space. We are equipped with several sewing machines and a sewing serger. We have an ever increasing stock of quality costumes and continually add to our inventory. The Costume Shop was recently remodeled and updated in January 2017.

We have several nooks and crannies where we store props, but the bulk of our inventory is in this space, which was recently upgraded in December of 2016. It was a wonderful addition to our department because we were able to contain the majority of our quality props in a one stop shop.

We have two modest dressing rooms which are conveniently located backstage of the W.D. Powell Theatre, one for the ladies and one for the gents. Each has a bathroom attached along with a washer and dryer.
