5 Tips for Actually Being Healthier in 2025
A post by Ivy-Marie Adkisson, Director for Campus Recreation, Union University
As the new year rolls in, it's the perfect time to embark on a fitness journey. Getting fit is not just about transforming your body — it's about boosting your overall health, elevating your mood and increasing your energy levels.
Losing weight is often the No. 1 resolution set for New Year's, but it is also the most quickly abandoned. You can defy the odds this year by choosing a healthy lifestyle that works for you.
Here are five tips to help you kickstart your health and fitness resolutions and keep the momentum going throughout the year.
1. Choose a workout that fits your schedule.
The most effective fitness plan is one you can stick with consistently. Break your larger fitness goals into smaller, achievable milestones to help maintain motivation and track your progress along the way.
Remember to incorporate a mix of exercises that target different muscle groups and enhance your overall fitness. Whether it's yoga, running, cycling or strength training, variety can keep your routine engaging and enjoyable.
Celebrate each milestone you reach, no matter how small, as these victories will fuel your determination and inspire you to keep moving forward. Make your wellness journey a fun and rewarding part of your life.
2. Avoid "quick fix" fitness programs.
Body transformation is a gradual journey, so focus on long-term results and maintain a positive outlook. Take the time to celebrate all your achievements, no matter how small. Rewarding yourself for reaching milestones can boost your motivation and commitment to your fitness journey.
Remember, change takes time, and everyone progresses at their own pace. Embrace the experience and enjoy the improvements in your health and fitness.
3. Work out with a partner.
Whether it's your spouse or a friend from college, exercising together can make the process more enjoyable and help keep you accountable. Sharing the experience can also lead to friendly competition, motivating each other to push beyond personal limits.
4. Remember that healthy living is more than just exercise.
It's important to nourish your body with a well-rounded diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. These essential nutrients provide the energy necessary for physical activities and contribute to overall wellness.
In addition to proper nutrition, prioritizing sleep is crucial for both mental and physical health. Strive for seven-to-nine hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to recover and refresh. Develop a consistent sleep schedule, establish a calming bedtime routine and ensure that your sleeping environment is comfortable and promotes restful sleep. Try sleeping with your phone across the room.
Staying hydrated is also super important. Water plays a key role in regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients and removing waste. Try to consume at least eight glasses of water daily, keeping in mind that your hydration needs may differ based on your activity levels and environmental factors. Add a new water bottle to your Christmas list to help achieve this.
5. Be flexible with your plan.
We are all human, and life changes, so give yourself room to make changes along with it. Select what works best for you. If you find a love for running, incorporate it into your routine. Mixing different types of exercises — like strength training, cardio and flexibility workouts — can keep your regimen interesting and engage various muscle groups.
Pay attention to your body during and after workouts. If you experience pain or discomfort, it's essential to rest or adjust your routine rather than push through it.
