August 10, 2017 – Dr. Michele Atkins has been named Interim Dean of the College of Education at Union University, following the recent retirement of Dr. Thomas R. Rosebrough. Rosebrough has transitioned to a part-time teaching role in the College after twenty-one years of significant service as Executive Dean for the College of Education and Human Studies. Atkins began as Interim Dean on August 1.
Dr. Atkins also currently serves as Assistant Provost for Accreditation and Research and as a Professor of Education at Union. Atkins’ knowledge of the College of Education and experience on the Dean’s Council will ensure the good work of the College continues. The search for the next dean will continue in Fall 2017.
Dr. Atkins came to Union in 1998 after a 10-year career in the public school arena, where she served as a special education teacher, administrator, and educational diagnostician. licensed school psychologist, Atkins has provided consultative services to local school districts in West Tennessee. Atkins has also served as Director of Graduate Studies and Director of the Ed.S. and Ed.D. programs on the Jackson campus. Atkins has chaired numerous dissertations and has research interests in the area of ethics in leadership, moral development, emotional intelligence, qualities of effective teachers and leaders, and psychological issues in the schools. Dr. Atkins has presented her research nationally and co-authored several journal articles.
