The history department began the 2014-2015 school year with a flurry of activities. On August 12, department faculty members met at Dr. Stephen Carls’s home for a working lunch. They discussed several items of business, including a list of special occasions planned for the fall semester. At the faculty/staff luncheon on August 14, Dr. Keith Bates was recognized for ten years of service as a faculty member at Union University and Dr. David Thomas was honored for 20 years of service.
Department members then joined in Union’s welcome for new and returning students by participating in several activities. Bates helped students move into university housing during move-in day on August 15. The following evening, Carls hosted five students interested in history at a history-designated table during Union’s annual new student dinner. On August 18, Phi Alpha Theta President Faith Bagley, PAT Vice President Hannah Jones, and Rutledge Honorary History Club President Bree McCuin manned the history department’s display booth at the Student Organizations Fair. A number of students stopped by the booth to learn more about the department, its student organizations, and department events scheduled for the fall semester.
A climax to the school’s launch of the new academic year was the annual fall convocation on August 22. Faculty and administration members wore caps and gowns for the occasion, while the Union University Singers provided special music. Provost Dr. Ben Mitchell gave a warm welcome to new students, faculty, and staff, and new Union University President Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver delivered the convocation address on “Liberty and Integrity.”
