Union’s Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society inducted four new members at its fall initiation/plenary meeting on September 15, 2014. Chapter Vice President Hannah Jones conducted the ceremony for Nick Hancock, Hunter Hawes, Stephen Lewoczko, and Bree McCuin, and President Faith Bagley presented them with their certificates of membership. A fifth new member, Nathan Handley, was unable to attend.
Bagley presided over the plenary meeting that followed. She passed around sign-up sheets asking for volunteers to work at the “Racing So They Can Ride” charitable fund-raising event on September 20 and to serve as ushers at the Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectureship on the evening of October 2. Bagley also announced the chapter’s upcoming homemade pizza party on October 17, the “Day of Remembrance” community service project near the Denmark Presbyterian Church on November 4, and the French Christmas dinner on December 6. Lastly, she mentioned the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Austin Peay State University on February 28. Faculty chapter advisor Dr. Stephen Carls talked about opportunities members have for winning national Phi Alpha Theta scholarships and paper prizes. He strongly encouraged those present to look at the national society’s website at phialphatheta.org for more information about the organization’s awards and prizes. As his final item, Carls surprised everyone by announcing that the chapter had won its 12th straight Best Chapter Award. He indicated that he had received the 2014 Best Chapter Award certificate and accompanying letter of congratulations from Phi Alpha Theta national headquarters in his mailbox that very afternoon. Attendees expressed their excitement with loud applause.
Following the meeting, chapter members congratulated the new inductees, and everyone enjoyed refreshments that included cinnamon pinwheel cookies.
