A group of Union students joined history department faculty members in performing a community service project next to the Denmark Presbyterian Church in Madison County as a part of Union University’s Campus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service on November 4, 2014. The project, sponsored by the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the history department, involved clearing a Civil War campsite behind the church of tree limbs, brush, and other debris. Twenty people from Union participated in the activity, and Dr. Stephen Carls served as the team leader. They enjoyed pizza and homemade chocolate chip cookies for lunch.
Billy King, the president of the Big Black Creek Historical Association, greeted the group upon its arrival and oversaw the work project. In addition, he spent time discussing the history of the town of Denmark and the importance of the Denmark Presbyterian Church in the early history of Madison County. He took the group on a historical tour that included the church, and two cemeteries, one of which was Presbyterian and the other Baptist. King gave copies of the first volume of his book Big Black Creek to all of the participants just before they returned to Union’s campus in the early afternoon.
