Union’s Phi Alpha Theta Chapter Purchases History Books for Emma Waters Summar Library

Nov 20, 2014 -

Union’s Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta purchased 15 history books for the university’s Emma Waters Summar Library this fall by combining a $250 Best Chapter Award prize received from the society’s national headquarters with a monetary contribution from an anonymous donor. At a special ceremony held in the library on November 20, Faith Bagley, the Delta-Psi chapter president, presented the Best Chapter Award check to Library Director Anna Beth Morgan. Other participants in the ceremony were Delta-Psi Vice President Hannah Jones, Chapter Secretary Sarah Carroll, and Dr. Stephen Carls, the chapter faculty advisor. Including this year’s purchases, the chapter has donated more than $3100 and given 103 books to the library since winning its first Best Chapter Award in 2003.

The book that had the distinction of being the 100th donated was Neil Kent’s The Sámi Peoples of the North: A Social and Cultural History. The other books that the Delta-Psi chapter purchased this year were: The Age of Evangelicalism: America’s Born-Again Years by Steven P. Miller; Cross and Scepter: The Rise of the Scandinavian Kingdoms from the Vikings to the Reformation by Sverre Bagge; Exit Berlin: How One Woman Saved Her Family from Nazi Germany by Charlotte R. Bonelli; The Gestapo: Power and Terror in the Third Reich by Carsten Dams and Michael Stolle; God’s Traitors: Terror and Faith in Elizabethan England by Jessie Childs; Hitler’s Philosophers by Yvonne Sherratt; Life, Death and Growing Up on the Western Front by Anthony Fletcher; Marching into Darkness: The Wehrmacht and the Holocaust in Belarus by Waitman Wade Beorn; Napalm: An American Biography by Robert M. Neer; Napoleon: The End of Glory by Munro Price; Poilu: The World War I Notebooks of Corporal Louis Barthas, Barrelmaker, 1914-1918 by Louis Barthas and Edward M. Strauss (trans.); Racisms: From the Crusades to the Twentieth Century by Francisco Bethencourt; St. Petersburg: Shadows of the Past by Catriona Kelly; and Wellington: The Path to Victory, 1769-1814 by Rory Muir.

Phi Alpha Theta-purchased books for Union's Emma Waters Summar Library fill much of a table on November 20, 2014. The signs behind them indicate that the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta has used the prize money from its Best Chapter Awards since 2003 to purchase more than 100 books for the library.
