Sep 14, 2015 - The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society inducted six new members at its fall initiation/plenary meeting on September 20, 2015. Chapter Vice President Allen Bradley led the induction ceremony and President Nicholas Hancock handed the initiates their membership certificates. The students inducted into the society were Beth Adams, Thomas Gray, Kathryn Mitchell, Priscilla Porter, Gideon Ragland, and Jordan Sellers. Dr. Stephen Carls read a statement of welcome to the inductees from Dr. Graydon Tunstall, the executive director of Phi Alpha Theta.
After that, Hancock conducted the business meeting. He announced the chapter’s activities planned for the fall semester. First on the list was a request for volunteers to help at the “Racing So They Can Ride” 5k and 10k races on September 19; a sign-up sheet was distributed for the event. Secondly, he indicated that the chapter would hold a homemade pizza party at Dr. Carls’s home. Hancock then announced the Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectureship on October 29 and secured four students to serve as ushers at the evening lecture. Next was the Phi Alpha Theta-sponsored community service project at Britton Lane Battlefield as a part of Union’s Campus and Community Day on November 3; Hancock pointed out that a cannon demonstration would be a part of the activity. Finally, he noted that the last scheduled Delta-Psi group activity would be the annual French Christmas dinner at Dr. Carls’s home on December 5.
Dr. Carls handed out fliers containing information about Phi Alpha Theta scholarship and research paper competition opportunities. He then highlighted the 2016 Phi Alpha Theta Biennial Convention in Orlando, Florida, on January 6-10, and distributed fliers with a call for students to submit paper proposals for the convention. The chapter also had Savannah German, a 2012 Union history graduate, talk about her experiences as a student participant at the biennial convention in Orlando in 2012.
The last formal action of the meeting came when Dr. Carls gave a Phi Alpha Theta pen to Beth Adams for being the 450th person to join Phi Alpha Theta through Union’s Delta-Psi chapter.
Refreshments that included homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies were served at the end of the meeting.
