Phi Alpha Theta Sponsors Community Service Project At Britton Lane Battlefield

Nov 3, 2015 - The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, joined by the history department and the Rutledge Honorary History Club, sponsored a community service project at Britton Lane Civil War Battlefield on November 3, 2015. This year’s project represented the 12th straight year that the Delta-Psi chapter has been a part of Union University’s Campus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service. Nineteen people participated in the activity, including the history department’s 5 full-time members and 14 students.

Britton Lane Battlefield Association President Jim Weaver, assisted by association member James Price, hosted the Union group. The morning began with a lesson on how to fire a cannon. Weaver divided the Union contingent into four teams, and gave each team member a specific assignment in loading and firing a cannon that he brought for the occasion. After the hands-on experience with the cannon, the participants listened to Weaver talk about the Battle of Britton’s Lane and the challenges that exist in trying to determine the exact spot of the engagement. The project volunteers concluded their time at Britton’s Lane by raking leaves out of a stable and cleaning a cabin at the battlefield.
