Feb 20, 2017 - Members of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta gathered for the society’s spring semester plenary meeting on February 20, 2017. The evening began with the initiation of Jessica Barton into the chapter. Vice President Kathryn Mitchell conducted the ceremony and President Jordan Sellers presented Barton with her membership folder.
Sellers led the business meeting that followed. The chapter started by selecting officers for 2017-2018: Seth Reid, president; Katherine Cheshire, vice president; and Jessica Barton, secretary. Sellers then presented a set of planned chapter activities for the spring semester, including: a Red/Blue T-shirt day on March 13; an Old Hickory Rotary Club pancake breakfast on March 18; the Franco-American bake sale on March 22; the Phi Alpha Theta regional conference at the University of Tennessee at Martin on April 1; Union’s Scholarship Symposium on April 25; the history department awards banquet on May 4; and the Phi Alpha Theta cookout on May 12. Dr. Stephen Carls, the Delta-Psi faculty advisor, elaborated on several of the events, especially the bake sale and the regional conference. He also talked about national Phi Alpha Theta scholarship and paper prize opportunities and the 2018 biennial convention that will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dr. Keith Bates recognized Delta-Psi member Emily Littleton for journalistic honors that she earned at the Southeast Journalism Conference on February 16-18. She placed second in magazine writing, third in the College Journalist of the Year competition, and fifth in newswriting.
The evening concluded with homemade chocolate chip cookies, Coca Cola, Sprite, and bottled water. Thirteen Phi Alpha Theta members attended the meeting.
