History Department Does Community Service Project at Liberty Garden Park

Nov 7, 2017 - The history department and Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society co-sponsored a community service project at Liberty Garden Park & Arboretum on November 7, 2017. Several members of the Rutledge Honorary History Club also participated in the event. In all, 17 people from Union worked at the park under the supervision of representatives from the City of Jackson, the Keep Jackson Beautiful Commission, and the Madison County Master Gardeners program. The project was a part of Union University’s annual Campus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service.

Participants performed several tasks at the park. One group helped with the pruning of trees while another engaged in mulching. Others trimmed shrubs, raked garden beds, pulled weeds, and swept sidewalks.

Tammy Buchanan-Anderson, the project supervisor, began the morning by presenting a history of Liberty Garden Park and introducing the other project leaders. They included Jack Baudo (Master Gardener), Jodi Jacobs (Keep Jackson Beautiful), and J. D. Sims (City of Jackson groundskeeping crew supervisor).

Members of Union University’s project team included six professors and 11 students. The faculty members who took part were Drs. Henry Allen, Keith Bates, Stephen Carls, Terry Lindley, Kelvin Moore, and David Thomas. The student participants were: Katie Allison, Jessica Barton, Lydia Black, Katherine Cheshire, Sara Conley, Matthew Latham, Seth Reid, Ali Renckens, Lillie Salazar, Luke Sower, and Emily Summers. Dr. Carls coordinated the event for the Union group.
