History Students Present Papers At Scholarship Symposium

Apr 24, 2018 - History major Seth Reid and history minor Jonathan Pope delivered papers at the Union University Scholarship Symposium on April 24, 2018. More than 30 people attended their presentations.

Reid’s paper was titled “Votary of the Blue Flower: A Historical Reflection on Hope in the Life and Thought of C. S. Lewis” and based on an honors thesis he wrote under the direction of Dr. David Thomas. According to Reid, Lewis had a deep sense of longing that evolved into “a hope for Christ to bring the solid and glorious New Creation where pain is redeemed, harmony is perfect, and people are united with God.” Reid traced Lewis’s view of hope throughout his life.

The title of Pope’s paper was “God, His People, and Mission to the Nations: A Biblical Theological Exploration of the Theme of Mission in the Old and New Testaments.” Pope emphasized the importance of the topic of mission in the Bible. He explored especially relevant texts related to mission and the ways in which mission may have shifted during the major epochs of redemptive history. His goal was to “acquire a deeper understanding of how God’s mission of salvation fits into the overall story of the Bible.”
