Phi Alpha Theta and History Club Co-sponsor Community Service Project in Jackson

Nov 6, 2018 - The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the Rutledge Honorary History Club co-sponsored a service project at Liberty Garden Park and Arboretum in Jackson on November 6 as a part of Union University’s Campus and Community Day.

Twelve students joined four history department faculty members in performing maintenance and cleanup work at the park under the general supervision of Tammy Buchanan-Anderson from the City of Jackson mayor’s office. One group spread mulch around trees and garden areas while a second group created a pathway in a large wooded area of the park to allow children to navigate the woods easily and safely. The second group’s tasks included cutting down wild shrubs, trimming and carrying away tree branches, removing litter, and raking leaves. Refreshments were available throughout the activity and the Union workers returned to campus before noon.

The participating faculty members were Drs. Stephen Carls (the project coordinator at Union), Henry Allen, Terry Lindley, and David Thomas. Student volunteers included: Leah Atkins, Rachel Durham, Megan Ledbetter, Tranae Newsome, Addison Osborne, Gideon Ragland, Miles Randall, Lillie Salazar, Luke Sower, Emily Summers, Nicholas Terra, and Jack Waters.
