Aug 23, 2019 - The history department launched the 2019-2020 school year by participating in several August activities.
On August 12, the department faculty had their annual start-of-the-year working lunch at the home of Dr. Stephen Carls. Members discussed department events planned for the fall semester, including the welcome reception for history students, the Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectureship, the Day of Remembrance community service project, and the French Christmas dinner.
The department also had representation at student-focused events. Carls dined with incoming freshman history majors at Union’s New Student Dinner on August 17. At the Campus Life Fair the following day, history student club officers Leah Atkins, Megan Ledbetter, and Luke Sower talked with many new students about the history department and handed out history department flyers.
The climax of the first week of classes, which began on August 20, was Union’s annual fall convocation on August 23. During the convocation, the University Singers provided special music, Provost John Netland introduced new faculty, Student Government Association President Gabby Morocco welcomed new students, and Union University President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver delivered a presidential address on “Faith.” Oliver’s presentation was the fifth in a series concerning a virtuous life.
