Phi Alpha Theta Sponsors Community Service Project at Liberty Garden Park

Oct 29, 2019 - Union’s Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta sponsored a community service project at Liberty Garden Park and Arboretum on October 29, 2019. The activity was part of the university’s 17th Annual Campus and Community Day involving service projects throughout the greater Jackson area.

Eleven faculty members and students worked at the park under the guidance of project co-coordinators Tammy Buchanan-Anderson, who is the chair of the Liberty Garden Park Committee, and Jack Baudo, a UT Master Gardener and Keep Jackson Beautiful Commission member. Several other Jacksonians – either UT Master Gardeners or Keep Jackson Beautiful members – also helped. The tasks that the volunteers performed included mulching, removing kudzu, trimming trees and shrubs, sprucing up the children’s garden area, and raking and bagging leaves and walnuts.

Buchanan-Anderson highlighted the importance of the volunteers’ work by stating, “This effort demonstrates conservation and stewardship of the environmental, historical, scientific, and artistic elements of Liberty Garden Park. We gratefully acknowledge this gift of time and contribution.”

Union University participants at the event were: faculty members Henry Allen, Keith Bates, Stephen Carls, Terry Lindley, and David Thomas; and students Matthew Latham, Megan Ledbetter, Addison Osborne, Miles Randall, Luke Sower, and Nicholas Terra.
