History Department Ends Fall Semester with Annual French Christmas Dinner

Dec 7, 2019 - The history department marked the end of the fall semester with its 16th annual Phi Alpha Theta-sponsored French Christmas dinner at the home of Dr. Stephen Carls on December 7, 2019. Twenty-three people were at the dinner, during which Carls honored history major Nathan Van Neste who will graduate on December 14, 2019.

Emma Otto, a senior music education major, entertained attendees with a program of holiday music on her violin. The pieces she played were: “Angels We Have Heard on High” (based on a French carol of unknown origin); “Winter” (second movement of Concerto No. 4 of The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi); and “Coventry Carol” (English Christmas carol dating from the 16th century).

The evening menu consisted of several courses, starting with a cardamom-spiced butternut squash soup. The main course was baked salmon, creamed rice, and roasted asparagus. Guests were then served a fresh garden salad, followed by a plate with six kinds of cheeses and French bread. The dessert list included pots de crème au chocolat, Dutch apple pie à la mode, and a lemon meringue pie. The meal ended with coffee and tea.
