History Majors Receive Honors at Virtual Awards Day Celebration

May 1, 2020 - Graduating history majors Macon Bullock and Luke Sower were recipients of special honors at Union University’s Virtual Awards Day celebration on May 1, 2020. Provost John Netland announced the recipients and their awards. President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver also participated in the awards program.

The School of Education presented Bullock with the Dorothy Woodard Myatt Secondary Intern of the Year Award. The award is named in honor of Dr. Dottie Myatt, who long served as Union’s assistant dean for teacher education and accreditation. Bullock will teach eighth-grade social studies in the fall at Lakewood Middle School in Buchanan, Tennessee, and will serve as the head boys basketball coach there. In addition, Bullock will begin work in the fall on an online M.A. program in history at the University of Memphis.

Sower received the spring 2020 Academic Excellence Medal in History and won first place in the Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Paper Competition. Union University presents an academic excellence medal to the graduating senior who has the highest grade point average in each discipline provided the GPA is at 3.5 or above. In case of a tie, the department faculty members decide the winner. Sower won the top Baggett award for his paper “The Lords of All Creation: Environmental Transformation in the Rise of Tenochtitlan.” He will attend law school at Arizona State University on a scholarship in the fall of 2020.
