Mar 14, 2021 - Three Union University history students presented papers at the 100th Anniversary Phi Alpha Theta Super-Regional Virtual Conference at the University of Arkansas on March 13, 2021. The students, along with their paper titles, were: Sandra Allen, “Women’s Contributions to the American Revolution”; Jackson Waters, “Muscular Christianity, Racial Theory, and the Call of Theodore Roosevelt”; and Savannah Wright “The Sound of Movie Music: The Development of Hollywood Film Music and American Culture”. Waters’ paper was a prize winner, for which he received an Outstanding Paper Presentation Award certificate and an honorary Phi Alpha Theta pin.

History department faculty members Drs. Stephen Carls and Terry Lindley served as panel chairs/commentators at the conference. Carls presided at a panel titled “Media, Politics, and Modernity Part II” and Lindley chaired a panel called “Mid-20th Century America.”

Carls celebrated Phi Alpha Theta’s 100th anniversary at his home on March 14 with a cake that his wife baked for the occasion. Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society originated at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in March 1921.
