Sep 27, 2021 - The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society conducted its fall semester plenary meeting on September 27, 2021.
After student members at the gathering introduced themselves, the chapter initiated three new members – Joe Gee, Jack Jenkins, and Anna Yadkowski – into the society. Chapter Vice President Tad Binkley led them in their membership oath and President Nicholas Terra presented them with their certificates of membership. Dr. Stephen Carls, the chapter’s faculty advisor, concluded this part of the meeting by reading a letter of congratulations to the new members from Phi Alpha Theta national headquarters.
Terra presided over the business segment of the meeting. He gave a summary of the chapter’s participation in the “Racing So They Can Ride” 5k and 10k races on September 18 that started and ended at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Jackson. Five chapter members served as volunteers at the event, which raised money for hippotherapy in West Tennessee. Terra then announced the upcoming Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectureship on October 25 with Dr. David A. Bell of Princeton University as the speaker. Four student members volunteered to serve as ushers at the evening lecture. As for Union University’s Campus and Community Day on November 2, Terra mentioned the possibility of going to Liberty Garden Park, as the chapter has done for several years. Carls talked about opportunities at the national level of Phi Alpha Theta for student scholarships, paper prizes, and Best Chapter Awards and passed out information regarding them. Carls also mentioned the possibility of a Phi Alpha Theta regional conference occurring in the spring of 2022, where chapter members could present papers. The last agenda item was an outdoor photo session during which Union’s chief photographer took pictures of chapter members near the school’s fountain.
For refreshments, attendees enjoyed homemade chocolate-filled oatmeal cookies and bottled water.
