Apr 19, 2022 - Nicholas Terra, a double major in history and philosophy, presented a history paper at the Union University Scholarship Symposium on April 19, 2022. Terra began his paper, titled “The 1775 Bermuda Gunpowder Plot: An Analysis of Its Historical and Cultural Significance,” by talking about a Bermudian group’s theft of a gunpowder stock in Bermuda in 1775 to help the American colonies in their revolutionary war against England in return for desperately needed supplies. What developed from this set of events was a Bermudian myth that Bermuda saved the American cause in the American Revolutionary War. Terra explained how the myth developed and assessed its cultural significance for Bermuda.
Terra’s paper advisor was Dr. Keith Bates of the history department, and the session chair on April 19 was Dr. Mark Dubis of the School of Theology and Missions.
