Sep 26, 2022 - Union’s Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society held its fall plenary meeting on September 26, 2022, at which the chapter initiated four new members into the society. Delta-Psi Vice President Breanna Edmiston led the initiation ceremony, while President Tad Binkley presented the inductees with their certificates of membership. The inductees were John Garland, Lydia McGinnis, Nicholas Palmer, and Christian Young. Each new member received a Phi Alpha Theta T-shirt at the end of the initiation ceremony.
President Binkley presided over the business session of the meeting. The first agenda item was the presentation of T-shirts and Lindt chocolate bars to Phi Alpha Theta members who served as volunteers at the “Racing So They Can Ride” races on September 17. Those recognized included Dr. Henry Allen, Makayla Baker, Dr. Stephen Carls, Breanna Edmiston, Nicholas Palmer, Anna Yadkowski, and Christian Young; the eighth volunteer – Robert Briley – was unable to attend the plenary meeting. Binkley next announced that the honor society would continue a longstanding chapter tradition of contributing $250 to Union’s library for the purchase of history books and that Dr. Carls would provide links to publishers to help student members select books for purchase. Binkley then asked for volunteers to serve as ushers at the Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture on the evening of October 24, and four students quickly volunteered; they were Binkley himself, Breanna Edmiston, Abbie Hobson, and Nicholas Palmer. Regarding Union’s “Campus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service” on November 1, the chapter committed itself to do a community service project at Liberty Garden Park in Jackson. Binkley also announced a chapter field trip to the “Kirkin’ of the Tartans” church service at Jackson’s First Presbyterian Church on November 6. Carls followed Binkley by informing attendees of the scholarships and paper prizes that the national Phi Alpha Theta office awards each year. The last item on the agenda was an outdoor group photo on Union’s fountain plaza.
Refreshments at the meeting consisted of homemade oatmeal cookies and bottled water.
