Apr 15, 2023 - Four student members of Union University’s Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society traveled with Drs. Stephen Carls and Henry Allen to Western Kentucky University (WKU) in Bowling Green to present papers at the Kentucky Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference on April 15, 2023.
The four students and their paper titles were: Breanna Edmiston, “Seized by the Passions: An Essay Highlighting the Controversy of the Great Awakening”; Abigail Gilbert, “Robin Hood: Man or Myth?”; Jack Jenkins, “American Interstates: The Connecter and Divider”; and Christian Young, “Killing the Indian, Saving the Man: America’s Answer to Native American Education and Culture.” The students had 15 minutes to deliver their papers, with each required to use PowerPoint as part of their presentation. Dr. Allen served as a panel chair.
A plenary lecture took place late in the morning. David Serafini, the advisor to Western Kentucky’s Eta-Pi chapter, began the session by welcoming conference attendees. Dr. Jeffrey Miner, the conference coordinator and a medieval historian at WKU, introduced the plenary speaker who was Dr. Katherine Lennard. Lennard, recently hired as the Frockt Family Chair of Civil War Studies at WKU, spoke on the topic of “Unsettled in the Archive: Encountering the Assassin’s Hood.”
Edmiston won a runner-up award in the undergraduate best papers competition. She earned a book as her prize.
