Festival of the American Matthay Association for Piano

The forty-ninth annual Festival of the American Matthay Association for Piano will be held in Jennings Hall at Union University on June 21-24. The festival features recitals, lecture recitals, lectures, and a masterclass. This event will focus on piano performance in the tradition of Tobias Matthay, a famous English piano pedagogue whose famous pupils include Dame Myra Hess and Moura Lympany.

All of the recitals feature a sonata by Beethoven and will be held in Hartley Recital Hall. On Wednesday through Friday the recitals are held at 8:00 p.m., while on Saturday the recital will be at 4:00 p.m. Performers will include Terry McRoberts from Union University, Neil Rutman from the University of Central Arkansas, Marjorie Lee from Virginia, and Lynn Rice-See from Middle Tennessee State University. On Wednesday McRoberts will perform the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, Rhapsodies, Op. 79 by Brahms, and Images I by Debussy. On Thursday Rutman will perform the Beethoven Sonata, Op. 81a and the Etudes, Op. 10 by Chopin. Lee will perform the Bach/Busoni Chaconne, the Beethoven Sonata in E-Flat Major, Op. 7, as well as works by Scriabin and Debussy on Friday. Rice-See will perform Davidsbündlertänze by Schumann, the Sonata in A-Flat Major, Op. 110 by Beethoven, and Scriabin’s fourth sonata.
