Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectures: Charles S. Maier

Dr. Maier's talk is entitled "An American Empire? Imperial Histories and Their Lessons." Dr. Maier will also present an afternoon lecture (12:15 pm) in Room D-3 (PAC) on "What is a World History a History of? Defining Global History Today."

Professor Maier, a specialist of twentieth-century European and world history, has written extensively on such subjects as European society after World War I, the Cold War, the Marshall Plan, the Holocaust, and Germany since World War II. He is presently working on a history of the twentieth-century world with Professor William Kirby of Harvard University, and a study of America and European international politics and economics following the Second World War. He has received numerous awards and grants during his career, including the Commander's Cross, Order of Merit from the German Federal Republic. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Harvard, Dr. Maier has served as Chairman of the undergraduate Social Studies Program (1991-1995) and as Director of the Center for European Studies (1994-2001).
