Cherry, Hamilton to read poetry at April 5 event

JACKSON, Tenn.April 1, 2024 — Local poets James E. Cherry and Patricia Hamilton will present readings April 5 at a Union University event to celebrate National Poetry Month.

The event, entitled “Receive, Reconcile, React,” will begin at 12:15 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium, located in the Barefoot Student Union Building.

Cherry is the author of four books of poetry, two novels and a collection of short fiction. His latest poetry collection, “Between Chance and Mercy,” is forthcoming from Willow Books. He has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award, a Lillian Smith Book Award and a Next Generation Indie Book Award.

Hamilton is a professor of English at Union and the author of “The Distance to Nightfall.” She won the 2015 and 2017 Rash Award in poetry, and her poem “Lipstick” was a Plainsongs Award poem in 2022.

The event is free and open to the public.
