Landon Haywood
Mechanical Engineering Major, Memphis, Tenn.
Freshman Landon Haywood is following in the footsteps of his parents and brother and making Union home for the next few years.
Haywood was drawn to Union not only because of his family’s history with the school but because of the small class sizes and campus environment. For Haywood, the small campus environment has been an advantage to forming genuine relationships in college.
"I can meet somebody once, and then I'm gonna see them again, and then I can follow up on that conversation and really get to know them, and then you have connections all around campus,” Haywood said.
The size of Union’s student body has allowed Haywood to make genuine connections with people he may not otherwise interact with.
“No matter what group you’re in, you’re still able to meet other people and get to know different people that maybe you wouldn’t normally know,” Haywood said.
Since starting college, Haywood has found community through Union’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as a Bible study with other men on campus.
“It’s nice to have those guys and that community around you,” Haywood said. “It’s just really a cool community where you’re able to open up and really just dive into the Word."
In addition to helping him grow and assimilate to college life, Haywood’s involvement in Greek life has inspired him to pursue more leadership opportunities at Union and apply for future opportunities in the coming semester.
Haywood hopes that getting involved with more leadership opportunities at Union will allow him to welcome others to Union with the same warmness he received during his first semester.
“I absolutely love it here, and so I want to try to show other people how great it is,” Haywood said.
As Haywood continues his education as an engineering major, he is trusting God for where his future career will take him in life.
“[Engineering] is so broad it can go anywhere, it’s just wherever the Lord provides me in the situation he puts me in when the time comes,” Haywood said.
