Toby Forehand, a senior digital communications major, has grown in confidence and skill as he learns to create art for a variety of media.
Forehand first heard about Union through a simple Google search but immediately knew it was where he would continue his education.
“It was the only school I applied to,” Forehand said. “I just wasn’t interested in anything else.”
During his time at Union, Forehand has learned how to create meaningful content and gained valuable skills to assist him in his future career. Additionally, he has grown in his understanding of faith and art and how the two are interrelated.
“In the intersection of faith and art, that’s what I hope to make my whole career out of,” Forehand said. “I do think there’s a huge need for that right now.”
Forehand hopes to use his digital media communications major not only as a future career but to draw others towards Christ through meaningful art.
“Society wants to see good art," Forehand said. “Society has these felt needs because of missing Christ.”
Forehand has been inspired by the Union community to challenge himself creatively and share his art with others. He used to fear hitting the “post” button for his work. Through various classes in the communication arts department, opportunities to create content for campus organizations and interaction with supportive peers and mentors at Union, he’s become more comfortable sharing his content with the world.
“I’ve just been in such a supportive environment,” Forehand said. “People have wanted to help me grow and wanted to see me doing things and put myself out there.”
Regardless of likes and views, Forehand always seeks to keep his mind focused on the kingdom of God as he shares his work with others. If the content he is creating leads even one person to consider Christ, he sees it as valuable.
“This is something that maybe one person will see it and we inch that much closer to the kingdom,” Forehand said. “Maybe we do and if so, then it’s good to put it out there. So, I’m going to put it out there.”
