Student Scholarships

Dr Joe Tucker Scholarship

Born and raised in Alabama, Dr. Joe Tucker came to Union University in September of 1969 as the chair of the Mathematics Department. Under his leadership the department grew in size from two members to seven members when he retired in 1991. During Dr.Tucker's tenure the computer science program at Union was added to the Mathematics Department in 1977. In addition to his outstanding leadership as department chair, Dr. Tucker was also known for his excellence in the classroom and received the Faculty of the Year award for 1978-79.After his retirement in 1991, Dr. Tucker continued to serve Union by teaching on a part-time basis for several years. In 2002, Dr. Joe Tucker and his wife moved back to their home state of Alabama.

Application

Criteria for Awarding the Scholarship
  1. A student recipient must have junior or senior classification, be a mathematics or computer science major or minor, and have junior or senior standing in the major/minor for which the award is made during the term(s) the scholarship is received. The meaning of junior or senior standing in the major shall be as determined by the scholarship committee.
  2. A student recipient must have completed at least one year of study (two full-length semesters) at Union University.
  3. A student may specify on his/her application for the scholarship the term(s) for which he/she is applying for the scholarship, to include Fall, Spring, or any Summer term.
  4. A student recipient must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher in the major/minor for which the award is made, and 2.75 or higher overall, through the term(s) immediately preceding the receipt of the scholarship.
  5. Applications shall be received in the spring semester (application process and deadlines to be determined by the scholarship committee) for awarding of scholarship(s) during the following academic year (fall through summer).
  6. Before the fund grows to the point where multiple scholarships can be granted, priority for awarding scholarships shall be established as follows (for academic years in which the students receive the scholarships):
    • Odd-year fall through even-year summer: a. MAT major, b. CSC major, c. MAT minor, d. CSC minor
    • Even-year fall through odd-year summer: a. CSC major, b. MAT major, c. CSC minor, d. MAT minor
  7. After the fund grows to the point where multiple scholarships can be granted, scholarships shall be granted to students in both disciplines in an equitable manner as determined by the scholarship committee and the department(s) of mathematics and computer science..
  8. When determining the recipient(s) of the scholarship from among the applicants, the committee shall consider the applicants’ GPA/academic success, financial need, leadership or leadership potential in KME, ACM, or other departmental activities, and character.

Bill Truex Computer Science Scholarship

The Bill Truex Computer Science Fund was established by Bill Truex in order to foster Christian higher education for students at Union University. Alumnus Bill Truex served as founding faculty member in Computer Science from 1975-1987 and as the first director of Union's Computing Center.

Criteria for Awarding the Scholarship
  • Be a Freshman (not intended for transfer students) AP and dual-enrollment credit will qualify.
  • Have a 30 ACT composite score or SAT equivalent (If no student meets the minimum, the student with the highest score may be considered.)
  • Be a Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity Major (or equivalent). Note: If the student changes majors between the Fall and Spring semesters, the Spring scholarship will be forfeited.
  • Be enrolled in at least 1 Computer Science course each semester
