Phi Alpha Theta Gives Check to Union Library for Purchase of History Books

The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society presented a prize check that it received from Phi Alpha Theta headquarters as a part of its 2013 Best Chapter Award to Union University’s library on November 12, 2013. The $250 in prize money paid for 13 books that chapter members selected for the library’s history collection. Delta-Psi has won 11 straight Best Chapter Awards.

Gracie Wise, president of the Delta-Psi chapter, gave the check to Library Director Anna Beth Morgan in a ceremony held near a special Civil War exhibit titled “Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine.” Chapter Vice President Charles Snow and Dr. Stephen Carls, the chapter faculty advisor, also participated in the ceremony.

The 13 books that the prize money purchased include: Appomattox: Victory, Defeat, and Freedom at the End of the Civil War by Elizabeth R. Varon; Blood Sisters by Sarah Gristwood; Castlereagh by John Bew; The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler by Ben Urwand; Henry Ford by Vincent Curico; Knights of the Golden Circle: Secret Empire, Southern Secession, Civil War by David C. Keehn; Landscapes of the Metropolis of Death by Otto Dov Kulka; Lincoln’s Tragic Pragmatism by John Burt; Margaret Thatcher: From Grantham to the Falklands by Charles Moore; The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnassy; The People’s Car by Bernhard Rieger; Saving Italy by Robert M. Edsel; Stalin’s Curse: Battling for Communism in War and Cold War by Robert Gellately.
