Spring 2023 Department Awards

Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Pin and Academic Excellence Certificate — For a graduating member of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society who has a major in history and who has a grade point average of 3.5 or better in that discipline. This year's winner was Jack Jenkins.

History Major Award — For a graduating history major who has done outstanding work in their history courses at Union University — his year's winner was Tad Binkley.

History Minor Award — For a graduating history minor who has excelled in their history courses at Union University — This year's winner was Adren Pearce.

Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Paper Awards — For the best papers presented as part of the requirements in any Union University history course in the past year. Papers are judged on the use of primary sources, the originality of the topic, the historical quality and depth of the study, writing style, appropriate footnotes or endnotes, and a correctly done bibliography. This year's winners were:

  • First Place — Jack Jenkins, who dealt with "American Interstates: The Connecter and Divider"
  • Second Place — Noah Kea, who wrote on "Fires in Kharkov: An Explanation for Russian Disasters at Kharkov"
  • Third Place — Christian Young who penned a paper on "Native American Boarding Schools: The Cultural Genocide of Native Americans"
  • Honorable Mention
    • Breanna Edmiston who authored a paper titled "The Persistence of Deism: A Defense of the Founding Fathers' Religion,"
    • Abigail Gilbert, who wrote about "Robin Hood: Man or Myth?"
    • Jonathan Sanders who focused on "The History of the Interpretation of the Author of Hebrews."

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences — For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2023 Kentucky Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Western Kentucky University on April 15. Each of them received a book and a certificate of commendation. They were Breanna Edmiston, Abigail Gilbert, Jack Jenkins, and Christian Young.

Recognitions for Student Club Officers — For the 2022-2023 president and vice president of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club. The department certificates of appreciation went to:

  • Tad Binkley — President of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society
  • Breanna Edmiston — Vice President of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society
  • Breanna Edmiston — President of the Rutledge Honorary History Club

Fifteenth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award — For a history alumnus/alumna who has excelled in his or her professional career, in service to the community or the history profession, and/or in support of the activities of the Department of History. This year's recipient was Geoffrey Lindley.

Special Recognition for Dr. Carls's Retirement — The Department of History gave retiring history professor Dr. Stephen Carls a hand-carved wooden poppies bowl with historical significance for his 40 years of faithful service to the department and Union University.

This year's winners were:

  • First Place — Anne Adams, who authored a paper on "A 'Sincere and Informal' Relationship: Twentieth-Century Popular Monarchy and the Bond between Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and Her People in World War II."
  • Second Place — Nicholas Terra, who wrote on "The 1775 Bermuda Gunpowder Plot: An Analysis of Its Historical and Cultural Significance."
  • Third Place — Breanna Edmiston, who penned a paper on "'Seize'd by the Passions or Squeeze'd out of Reason?' An Essay Highlighting the Controversy of the Great Awakening."

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences — For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2022 Arkansas Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Harding University on April 2. Each of them received a book and a certificate of recognition. They were Anne Adams and Nicholas Terra.

Recognitions for the Spring Graduating History Majors and Phi Alpha Theta Members — Graduating history majors and Phi Alpha Theta members included: Anne Adams (history and Phi Alpha Theta), Sandra Allen (history and Phi Alpha Theta), Walker Beasley (history and Phi Alpha Theta), Dalton Lefave (history), and Nicholas Terra (history and Phi Alpha Theta).

Recognitions for Student Club Officers — For the 2021-2022 president and vice president of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club. The department gave certificates of appreciation to:

  • Nicholas Terra — President of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society.

  • Sandra Allen — President of the Rutledge Honorary History Club.

Fourteenth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award — For a history alumnus/alumna who has excelled in his or her professional career, in service to the community or the history profession, and/or in support of the activities of the Department of History. This year's recipient was Mr. Jonathan Nason.

Special Recognition for Dr. Lindley's Upcoming Retirement — The Department of History gave retiring history professor Dr. W. Terry Lindley a crystal award for his 36 years of faithful service to the department and Union University.

  • Second Place — Jackson Waters, who wrote on "The Decline and Fall of the Virginian Church"
  • Third Place — Anne Adams who penned a paper on "A Young Queen of Character and Faith: Wilhelmina of the Netherlands' Role in Unifying the Netherlands in the Early 20th Century," and Addison Osborne who dealt with "Black Gold: Eastern Kentucky's Resource Curse"
  • Honorable Mention — Tad Binkley who authored a paper titled "The Sacrifice: Stephen Mather and the National Park Service Organic Act," and Savannah Wright who focused on "The Sound of Movie Music: The Development of Hollywood Film Music and American Culture"

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences — For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2021 Phi Alpha Theta Super-Regional Virtual Conference at the University of Arkansas on March 13. Each of them received a book and a certificate of commendation. They were Sandra Allen, Jackson Waters, and Savannah Wright.

Thirteenth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award — For a history alumnus/alumna who has excelled in his or her professional career, in service to the community or the history profession, and/or in support of the activities of the Department of History. This year's recipient was Dr. Keith Bates.

History Minor Award — For a graduating history minor who has done excellent work in history courses at Union University. This year's winners were William Hazlerig and Lillie Salazar.

History Student Teacher Award — For a graduating history major with a secondary education minor who has shown an exceptional commitment to achieving excellence in classroom teaching. This year's winners were Macon Bullock and Megan Ledbetter.

  • First Place — Luke Sower, who dealt with "The Lords of All Creation: Environmental Transformation in the Rise of Tenochtitlan"
  • Second Place — Katie Allison, who wrote on "Biblical Feminism: An Oxymoron? A History of Evangelical Feminists' Understanding of Biblical Justice and Biblical Authority"
  • Third Place — Macon Bullock who penned a paper on "Charles Guiteau: An Assassin's Legacy," and Christopher Hearn who dealt with "A Great Man, or Maybe a Criminal: The Comedic Iconoclasm of Tom Smothers"
  • Honorable Mention — Leah Atkins who authored a paper titled "Poisonous Women: Gender and Power in Ancient Rome," and Jack Waters who focused on "Muscular Christianity, Racial Theory, and the Call of Theodore Roosevelt"

This year's winner was Brianna Hammond.

  • First Place - Katlyn Allison, who dealt with "The Feminine Pens of Revolution: A History of Women's Patriot Political Literature in the American Revolution"
  • Second Place - Luke Sower, who wrote on "Christian Shamanism: Ivan Veniaminov and the Adoption of Orthodoxy as the Indigenous Faith of Russian Alaska"
  • Third Place - Megan Ledbetter who focused on "From Reconciliation to Revolution: The Shift in Colonial Perspective of British Authority Preceding the American Revolution"
  • Honorable Mention - Christopher Hearn who authored a paper titled "The Push to Rebellion: Georgia's Entrance into the American Revolution"

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences - For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2019 Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Belmont University on March 30. Each of them received a book and certificate of recognition. They were Lauren Butler, William Choate, and Luke Sower.

Eleventh Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award - For a history alumnus/alumna who has excelled in his or her professional career, in service to the community or the history profession, and/or in support of the activities of the Department of History. This year's recipient was Mr. Robert Briley.


Spring 2018 Department Awards

Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Pin and Academic Excellence Certificate - For a graduating member of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society who has a major in history and who has a grade point average of 3.5 or better in that discipline. This year's winner was Seth Reid.

History Minor Award - For a graduating history minor who has done excellent work in history courses at Union University. There were two winners this year, namely, Jonathan Pope and Ali Renckens.

The Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Paper Awards - For the best papers presented as part of the requirements in any Union University history course in the past year. Papers are judged on the use of primary sources, the originality of the topic, the historical quality and depth of the study, writing style, appropriate footnotes or endnotes, and a correctly done bibliography. This year's award recipients were:

  • First Place Award - Luke Sower, who authored "From Tenochtitlan to Mexico City: Cortés' Dream to Regain the Glory of the Aztec Capital"
  • Second Place Award - Seth Reid, whose paper was titled "The Votary of the Blue Flower: A Historical Reflection on Hope in the Life and Thought of C. S. Lewis"
  • Third Place Award - Ali Renckens, who wrote on "From the Coalbin to the Diamond: How Baseball Changed America's Most Segregated City"
  • Honorable Mention Award - Leah Atkins, for her paper called "Poisonous Women: A Literal and Metaphorical Contaminant"

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences - For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2018 Arkansas Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at the University of Arkansas at Monticello on April 7. Each of them received a book and a certificate of recognition for their outstanding papers. They were: Leah Atkins who won third place honors at the conference; Lauren Butler; Ali Renckens; and Luke Sower, who won the first-place award in the regional conference paper competition.

Recognitions for Student Club Officers - For the 2017-2018 president and vice president of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society and the 2017-2018 president of the Rutledge Honorary History Club. The department gave certificates of appreciation to:

Tenth Annual History Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award - For a history alumnus/alumna who has excelled in his or her professional career, in service to the community or the history profession, and/or in support of the activities of the Department of History. This year's recipient was Ms. Beverly Smothers.

History Student Teacher Award - For a graduating history major with a secondary education minor who has shown an exceptional commitment to achieving excellence in classroom teaching. This year's winner was Stephen Lewoczko.

  • Second Place - Beth Adams, who wrote on "Nobility or Necessity?: Native Americans' and White Settlers' Claims to Early Kentucky"
  • Third Place (tie) - Stephen Lewoczko, who wrote about "A Real-Life Horror Story: The Unjust Court-Martial of Captain Charles McVay III;" and Seth Reid whose paper was on "The Faith of Revolutionary Clergymen: The Varying Responses of American Clergymen to the War of Independence"
  • Honorable Mention - Priscilla Porter who authored a paper titled "The Forgotten British"

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences - For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2017 Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at the University of Tennessee at Martin on April 1. Each of them received a book and a certificate of commendation. They were: Beth Adams, Stephen Lewoczko, Emily Littleton, and Seth Reid.

This year's recipient was Mr. Rick Rudesill.

History Minor Award - For a graduating history minor who has done excellent work in history courses at Union University. This year's winner was Bree McCuin.

History Student Teacher Award - For a graduating history major with a secondary education minor who has shown an exceptional commitment to achieving excellence in classroom teaching. This year's winner was Shelby Pace.

The Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Paper Awards - For the best papers presented as part of the requirements in any Union University history course in the past year. Papers are judged on the use of primary sources, the originality of the topic, the historical quality and depth of the study, writing style, appropriate footnotes or endnotes, and a correctly done bibliography. This year's winners were:

  • First Place - Faith Bagley, who dealt with "Death and Suffering: Civil War Prisons in the North and South "
  • Second Place - Kenan Keller, who wrote on "Maoist Persecution of Christian Missionaries from 1949 to 1953"

Recognitions for Delta-Psi Chapter Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences - For Phi Alpha Theta student Faith Bagley who delivered an outstanding paper at the 2015 Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Austin Peay State University on February 28. She received a book and a certificate of commendation.

Recognitions for Student Paper Presenters at Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conferences - For Phi Alpha Theta students who delivered outstanding papers at the 2014 Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Tennessee Tech University on February 22. They were: Colby Benefield, Grace Morriss, Charles Snow, and Zachary Thompson. Allie Durham submitted a paper but was unable to attend the conference because of illness. The four students in attendance received books and certificates of commendation. Durham received a book only.

The James Alex Baggett History Research Awards - For the best papers presented as part of the requirements in any history course. Papers are judged on the use of primary sources, the originality of the topic, the historical quality and depth of the study, writing style, appropriate footnotes or endnotes, and a correctly done bibliography. This year’s winners were:
