Center for Media, Faith and Culture: Tom Cooper

Dr. Tom Cooper, professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, will present a lecture titled “From Ethics to Elections: What Concerns the American People about the U.S. Media” in the Carl Grant Center at Union University on Thursday evening, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Cooper, a world-renowned expert in media ethics, will be a scholar-in-residence at the university, Nov. 10-Dec. 11, hosted by the Center for Media Faith and Culture.

Cooper founded The Association for Responsible Communication, which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and as former assistant to Marshall McLuhan, and former assistant speech-writer in the White House, he is the author or co-author of six books and over one hundred academic and professional published articles on media ethics and related topics.

In 1986, Cooper co-founded “Media Ethics” magazine and became the first editor and later the first publisher. In addition, he has consulted for groups such as the Elders project, which includes Nelson Mandella, Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, and recently represented the Media Ethics Summit II conference leadership (which he co-convened) at the White House, Federal Communications Commission, members of Congress, Time Warner, Viacom, CBS and NBC.
