Our Plays
The End of Yourself
Written By: Don Bosley
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Running Time: Under 30 minutes
Target Audience: Jr. High School-Adult
Theme(s): Dependency on Jesus; Freedom; Denial; Self-Pity; Hopelessness
Play Synopsis: The End of Yourself is a short three-act play that examines the worldly issues that cause us to come to "the end of ourselves". We follow the life of Amy who begins as a young college student in jeopardy of failing a class-a fact that carries her to the end of herself, literally, and there, on the edge of the abyss, Amy meets a wide variety of characters: Millie, who is selling "Edge of Yourself" souvenirs, A gangster rapper who looks like a choir boy, an ailing, embittered military Sergeant, and, probably worst of all, her own mother-to name a few! Act two depicts Amy as a young mother who, once again, has reached the edge. As before, she meets more colorful characters who have reached the end of themselves, including her mother — again. The play concludes in Act 3 with a much more angry and distraught Amy. She is "out of strength, out of ideas, out of answers" — out of hope. She's reached the edge "for real" this time and sees no way out when Jesus appears on the scene. True to His character, Jesus explains to Amy that to truly know Him, she had to come to the end of herself. Jesus offers her freedom from her anxiety, if only she will take the leap of faith and come to Him. Amy struggles mightily to overcome her fear of leaping off the edge and, in one emotionally charged moment, with a powerful music underscore, Amy makes her decision to leap and runs right off the edge (of the stage) and jumps into the arms of Jesus.
Holey, Holey, Holey
Written By: Don Bosley
Genre: Comedy
Running Time: Under 15 minutes
Target Audience: Jr. High School-Adult
Theme(s): Emptiness; Truth vs. Lies
Last Performed: First Baptist Church McKenzie, TN
Play Synopsis: Holey, Holey, Holey is a short one-act that examines the God-sized void that exists in each of us. And if we try and fill that void with anything except Jesus, we're just applying various forms of anesthetic that eventually wear off. Our scene centers on a hospital patient who is gravely ill. A medical team is sent in to perform surgery and makes a shocking discovery: the man has a hole in him (and right in the middle of his soul, which is unquestionably the worst place). Emergency surgery is required immediately. The skilled surgeon tries to fill the hole with everything he can think of - from career to music to romance - but the hole remains. Nevertheless, the surgeon finally declares that the patient is indeed healed. The patient is left to consider what kind of medicine he's being given, and whether - just perhaps - there might be a more genuine Healer out there somewhere.
Lost and Found
Written By: Don Bosley
Genre: Comedy
Running Time: Under 25 minutes
Target Audience: Jr. High School-Adult
Theme(s): Finding the Lord; Complacency; Conformity; Pride; Hopelessness
Play Synopsis: Lost and Found is a two-part comedic drama that examines the very nature of being lost - relevant to all of us, since Scripture tells us that all have gone astray. Still, some of us don't realize we're lost. Others won't admit it. And others react with anguish, resignation or a crazy circular pursuit of a way out. Act I introduces us to five friends on a hiking trip through the wilderness, and already they're in big trouble. The map doesn't seem to jive with what they're seeing, the travelers are getting on each other's nerves, and there exists a stark difference of opinion as to how they should proceed. One wants to relax and camp; one wants to doggedly stay the course they're on; one wants to sprint in the most attractive direction available; one wants to have a nervous breakdown; and one simply wants to line up with whatever the most popular thought is at the moment. Act II finds our travelers worn down from their fruitless pursuit. Hard as they try, there apparently is no way out of the wilderness. Fortunately, they come across someone who does know a way - and the Way, as he explains, is Him. At first, the travelers simply want to ask him directions. But the mysterious Hiker reveals that the only way out of the wilderness is to follow him closely. With few other alternatives, the five friends choose to do so. Lost and Found has proven effective as a component for park outreaches and coffeehouse-style outreaches.
