MSW/MBA Dual Option
The Master of Social Work Program offers advanced study for individuals who are interested in managing and leading organizations by providing them with the educational tools necessary for furthering both their knowledge and careers. Combining the MSW with the MBA provides students with the opportunity to either simultaneously or post-graduate obtain two versatile and valuable degrees.
The Union MBA offers a unique leveling course (MBA 602) that prepares non-business majors for entrance into the MBA program. This course is offered the summer prior to beginning the MSW Program. Students without an undergraduate degree in Business are required to complete the course before progressing through the MBA program. It is an intensive course that encompasses Accounting, Statistics, Economics, and Management. It will prepare the student for the rigor of the Union MBA.
As a dual degree student, you will complete the full MSW Program core coursework, which is 51 hours of core coursework for traditional standing students and 33 hours for advanced standing students. Three of your core courses for the MBA program count as the electives for the MSW program (9 hours).
The MBA program counts 12 hours of your MSW core coursework as the electives you would take for the MBA program.
The traditional MBA requires 36 hours, but since you could 12 hours of your MSW coursework as your electives, you will take 24 hours of MBA coursework (plus the Graduate Business Foundations course for non-Business undergraduate degree students).
For traditional MSW students, the total number of hours required to complete the MSW/MBA dual degrees is 75 hours. For Advanced Standing MSW students, the total number of hours required to complete the MSW/MBA dual degrees is 51 hours.
"The MSW/MBA is an excellent combination! Combining business and social work has great potential in affirming dignity to man, building relationships and using economic development, workforce development, and micro-enterprise to address poverty. If you apply Social Work principals to business, you come out with more than just the bottom line."
