NCATE Accreditation

National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

NCATE logo The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) first approved Union's Professional Education Unit at both the initial and advanced levels in 2000. This national accreditation supported the unit's state approval that had stood since the mid-1950's. In March 2013 the NCATE and State boards of examiners visited Union's campus for the purpose of confirming facts stated in the Unit's Institutional Report and exhibits. The decision for reaffirmation by both NCATE and the State were determined by NCATE's Unit Accreditation Board and the Tennessee Teacher Education Council fall 2013. This reaffirmation is effective until spring 2020.

CAEP logo Effective July 2, 2013, NCATE joined the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) to form a new accrediting body called Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). CAEP will be the nation's only accreditor for educator preparation. Both NCATE and CAEP are grounded in rigorous standards that hold educator preparation programs accountable for using multiple measures as evidence of continuous improvement. Since Union's site visit was held before the final consolidation took place, Union's educator preparation unit is CAEP-accredited under the NCATE Legacy Standards. The final CAEP standards, approved August 29, 2013, consist of the following:

  • Standard 1: Candidate knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions
  • Standard 2: Assessment System and Unit Evaluation
  • Standard 3: Field Experiences and Clinical Practice
  • Standard 4: Diversity
  • Standard 5: Faculty Qualifications, Performance, and Development
  • Standard 6: Unit Governance and Resources

Union's educator preparation program will report annually to CAEP the progress being made toward meeting each of these new standards until the next site visit in spring 2020.
