UUCOP APhA-ASP Chapter Receives Innovative Programming Award from APhA-ASP
May 22, 2020 - The UUCOP American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) chapter was recently recognized with the national Innovative Programming Award from APhA-ASP. This award is presented to one APhA-ASP chapter each year and recognizes a chapter for an innovative project or activity. Union’s chapter was selected for our Tackling Tough Talks initiative implemented during the 2018-2019 academic year. Special thanks goes to student Ashley Draper Sidebottom, the chapter officer responsible for initiating and organizing the project. Chapter members were offered the opportunity to attend a series of sessions on having difficult conversations on topics such as mental health, human trafficking, anti-vaccination, anti-counterfeit medications, and diabetes diagnosis. Students attending a pre-specified number of sessions earned a certificate of completion for the program. We appreciate the efforts of all chapter members who attended the sessions and our outstanding 2018-2019 chapter officers, led by past-president Kate Norville, for all of their hard work on reporting last summer. The award would have been presented at the 2020 APhA Annual Meeting in National Harbor, MD in March, but due to COVID-19, was announced via a recent Facebook live session and will be formally presented at a later time.

UUCOP Students, Faculty and Alumni Attend TSSP, TSHP and TPA Meetings
Feb 27, 2020 - UUCOP students, faculty and alumni took part in last weekend’s TSSP, TSHP, and TPA meetings focused on Envisioning the Future of Pharmacy. Students in attendance on Saturday were led by TSSP President, P4 Julianna McMinn Bolton. Attendees heard from speakers covering topics including advocacy, community pharmacy, managed care, and professional branding. New TSSP officers from Union include first-year students Carson Cook, Nolan Holyfield, and Emily Quintanilla.
Health-systems pharmacists gathered on Sunday for the TSHP meeting. Current TSHP President, Dr. Kim Jones, served as the meeting moderator and had the pleasure of introducing three UUCOP colleagues over the course of the day. First, UUCOP alumnus Dr. Samarth Shah provided an excellent overview of recent updates to the 2019 Atrial Fibrillation guidelines. Following lunch, Dr. Mark Stephens led a collaborative effort on behalf of the experiential education directors from all 6 colleges and schools of pharmacy statewide in an interactive discussion on effective feedback strategies. Lastly, alumnus Dr. Monica Barrett provided a timely update on the current state of vaping-associated lung injury.
Students took advantage of time with state Representative Johnny Shaw during Monday evening’s Legislative Reception to discuss various bills that affect pharmacy practice. These advocacy efforts continued on Tuesday as the P2 cohort arrived in Nashville for the annual Pharmacy Day on the Hill. Students and faculty met with Senators Dolores Gresham, Ed Jackson, Bill Powers, and John Stevens and Representatives David Byrd, Bruce Griffey, Rusty Grills, Curtis Halford, Kirk Haston, Andy Holt, Chris Hurt, and Chris Todd.
